Default Pullback riser configuration.

I've been trying to get the bars 2-3 inches closer to my body on an '07 883XL. I know, I know...get new bars. Well, I won't bore you with details but the parts guy at Harley ordered two that did not work and claims he can't locate any that will do the job. (I don't like Buckhorn or Ape bars, but even those did not have enough bull back according to the parts guy (Who has been there at least 12 years). And not looking only at Harley stock here.

So. We talked about pullback risers. He tells me I must have at least 5 inch pullback risers to clear the tank. BUT he stated that it still would only pull the bars back less than an inch. At this point, I was tired of the whole thing and had them put my bars back on and rode home.

Then got to thinking. (Well, as best I can).

Consider: The steering head on the bike is not vertical (is it?). It is angled just a bit less than the rake angle. So, if one installs a 5 inch pullback riser, does it not stand to
reason that the top of the riser will be closer to the seat?

I'm not engineer enough to figure out how much that might be. But, it would seem that it would be for than an inch. (Considering that the risers are "pullback" and have a bend that adds to this distance).

I will gladly put the money into the bike (Riser, Bars, cables, labor, and whatever: I just want information that is reliable before I start.

Input would be much appreciated.

high school geometry, sine of 30 degrees is 0.5. Sooo. . .you are correct, every inch you go up, you come back half an inch( 30 degree rake or whatever they call that front fork angle) , Sooo. . . a 5 inch riser is 4 inches taller than stock, so you come back 2 inches, problem is you also go up about .7 times the 4 or about 3 inches. Soo . . . if ur a tall guy, with short arms , the straight risers work great. Orrr... you can try 4 inch risers with inch and a half of "pull back" ( no on know how they measure that though) , but they are cheap and worth a try.
clear as mud?
