well this wasnt the first oil change,it had its 1000 mile service and i asume the tranny was done at the time(but who knows).i am glad i did the engine and tranny(gives me piece of mind just knowing it was done)..im normally mechanically inclined but was a little stumped about the drain plug thing..i know now exactly how to do the service..
For Sportsters, you can use Amsoil 20-50W V-Twin oil in both your engine and primary. You can't use Mobil-1 in both places, but with Amsoil you can.
I beg to differ with you, but that's not true.
Mobil 1 20W-50 V-Twin is certified JASO MA (just like Amsoil) which means it contains no friction modifiers that could cause problems with a wet clutch system.
In fact (and I'm reading this directly off the back of a quart of Mobil 1 V-Twin);
"Specifically designed for air-cooled engines, transmissions and wet clutch primaries."
Amsoil 20W-50 MCV and Mobil 1 20W-50 V-Twin are both good products, and both are JASO MA rated so they can be used in both the engine, and tranny/primary on the Sportsters.
Hello, i am going to change the oil in my bike ( 06 dyna ) and my wifes bike (05) 883 low, we both just had the 1000 mile service and went fotr the syn3. We are both experiencing problems, like running hot excesive engine noise, hard shifting and impossible to get into neutral when hot. Ive got a manual for mine but hers i dont so i thought i would come to the sporster area and ask you guys some questions. I bought amsoil 20/50 and there 75/90 gear oil for my tranny. I am wondering what to put in hers, based on what ive read here so far it looks like the 20/50 for both holes. I forgot that the sporty tranny is part of the engine. My next question would be the capacity of the engine and primary. Thank you for any help

I run the Mobil 1 75-90 gear oil in my 1200C tranny/primary, but I'm sure the Amsoil product would work just as well.
My 2005 1200C takes exactly 1 quart in the tranny/primary after draining. In fact, the last time I changed fluid I had the bike level, and removed the derby cover to verify the amount of fluid to add. Knowing that it holds 1 quart it's much easier to change now. Instead of removing the derby cover I just drain the tranny/primary and add 1 quart through the inspection cover.
In the engine (with filter change) 3 quarts brings the fluid up to a correct level. You don't want to overfill the engine. I like to keep the "hot level" at the halfway mark (or a little lower) on the dipstick. Also, after adding engine oil it's a good idea to open the drain line slightly and let a little fluid flow back out to verify there isn't any air in the line. You should also 'prime' the new filter by putting a few ounces of oil directly into it before mounting it on the engine.
i think i might have over filled the tranny..i notice a drip of oill coming out of the bottom of the inspection cover..and i know the gasket is seated properly..is this a sign of being overfilled?

I just changed the oil/trans on my Sporty yesterday. I went with the HD Formula+ gear oil in the transmission, it's worked great so far, so I didn't see any reason to use anything else. The transmission takes one bottle, just drain and dump the whole 32oz bottle in.
For the engine, I've always bought 3 quarts of oil and ended up putting in 2 full bottles and 3/4 or the the third bottle. The 3.6 quarts HD recommends is incorrect, and I believe they reissued the recommendation to now say 2.8 quarts. Personally, I use Valvoline VR1 Racing oil in 20W50, it's about $4.50 a quart, less if on sale. Any name brand oil should be fine to use, as long as you change it often. It doesn't have to say "motorcycle" on the bottle, our engines and transmissions don't share the same oil.
