Popcorn sound=that is a great description. Hope you don't mind if i use that phrase. My 04 883custom is also cold blooded. I suppose I could put in different plugs suited for lower temps but hardly seems worth the effort considering the season is almost done around here. Just keep the choke open enough to keep it from coughing or cutting out. Then push it all the way in after it warms up. I don't know what I will do when I get EFI...

I do pretty much the same thing... Full choke to start, then half way when it sounds right and ride a mile or two then close a little more. But i can never have the choke completely closed or it will idle too low and shut off when i stop.
Dont mean to hijack your thread... but is it normal to not be able to close it all the way??

Once warmed up you should be able to complete close the choke. The idle speed adjustment is very simple.

I've had many carb'ed bikes, including a 1200 sportster years ago. Always start and run on full choke, then either off or halfway for a bit. Never fouled a plug. Heck, I can remember my dad's buddy riding all over the place one day wondering why his bike wasn't running right, only for my dad to find out the choke was on! And that didn't even foul the plugs.

What I would do if I were you and that concerned is to go buy 2 new plugs and a wrench, and keep them with you. I bet you'll never need them, but if you do you will be back up and running in 10 minutes. And, see what happens, if you are going through plugs every month, you have an issue, not the choke.

I Appreciate the advise, and it sounds exactly right. Figured these guy that told me not to choke the bike for more than a second or two when starting, than close it down or you will fowl the plugs didnt sound right to me either. This is a great forum.

It's called an enrichener not a choke and it's hard to believe that it's so difficult to operate that we are on page 2 of this post!
Pull it out, start your bike, put your coat and helmet on, push it in 1/4, ride for 2 miles and push it in the rest of the way!!
