bike has only 20000 on it , its a 1997 883 hugger and the last couple rides wife says bike doesnt go into 3rd exactly right.this is the only problem and the only gear it effects.says she can lift a lil harder the second time and it goes in(kinda like it is just missing it the first time) primary fluid only has about 800 miles on it,clutch was adjusted then also.kinda pressed for time is why i am asking you guys(a lil lazy to do the legwork)any thoughts??? does the primary need adjusted? transmission fluid wont do this will it? only thing i can think of .....hopefully not the actual gear or anything like that...anyway i need things to check please enlighten me....
I suggest that you buy a service manual. It will be a great help to you when you do any service to your bike. It will also let you know when you need to do a service to your bike. It sounds to me like you haven't adjusted your primary chain yet. I would start with that and then see if the shifting problem is resolved. Changing the fluid will not help adjust your primary chain. Good luck with your bike and ride safe out there!
Who did the fluid change? If it was a mechanic, head there to have it checked out. If not and you don't feel like you can get it right, head for one.
I'm not of the "do it yourself from the manual" crowd. I have a manual, and use it exactly like I need to: to assess whether or not I can fix something myself, or take it to a professional. I can do some things myself; the most important one is recognizing when I can't and need help.
I recently read a post about someone having the same issue going into second.. it may have been on another forum.. I haven't found it yet but I'll keep looking..
if I remember correctly I think it had something to do with a spring?
Strange as it may sound , I kinda had that problem.Low rpms shifted fine higher kinda of a hard shift , then I found that it has what I like to call a sweet spot.If the rpms are right on shifting then there is no issue.

Same here, I didn't really notice it too much until I installed the foot clutch and hand shifter. But there is DEFINITELY a sweet spot!
