Default won't suck gas

I filled the carb bowl before putting it back on, it does squirt gas in the chamber when I throttle it, and will run for about 30 seconds. I know the carb is ok i guess. I blew into where the gas goes into the carb and no obstruction. The hose from the petcock to the carb is not blocked. With the petcock off I could blow through it with no obstruction. Gas drains out of the tank with the petcock removed. Gas won't come out with the petcock on, but I don't think it's supposed to unless under vaccum. For some reason it won't suck gas into the bowl. I have the vaccum lines pluged in, even the one on the petcock. Am I missing something? This all began because I was removing the turn signals. Would anything electrical cause this? I had the wiring harness in the sterring clamp apart but only unplugged the turn signals.

Default RE: won't suck gas

The fuel supply to the carburetor is controlled by the valve handle positions and an internal vacuum operated alve. No fuel will flow through the valve until the following conditions are met: 1. Fuel valve handle in the on or reserve position.....I know but easy to overlook when frustrated.
2. A vacuum of abot 0.05-1.0 of Mercury must be applied to the nipple.

No it sounds like you have double checked the lines, both fuel and vacuum. Double check fuel line at rear of petcock and vacuum line toward the left front side of the petcock. The vacuum line attaches at the top rear side of the carb.According to the service manual only three things lead to the vacuum valve not opening: Hose not connected to vacuum nipple. 2. Vacuum hose assembly pinched or cracked or 3. Leaking Diaphram, this one recommends replacing the entire valve assembly......that for me would be a very final option given what work you were doing. Another thought occurred to me. You apparently removed the tank. A previous post questioned a vapor lock. The tanks vapor release hose in under the tank. Double check to ensure you did not crimp the hose/ That hose runs from the tank to a vapor valve (black) and then from the valve to another black hose that vents to the atmosphere (unless you are in CA). The vapor valve is in front of the battery tray. The design here is to prevent build up of gas vapor in the tank...a bad thing.

Another thing.....all of us....yes, everyone, has turned a 10minute $5 job into a living hell and we all have questioned our desire to save a buck or two. Don't give up.....yes it may in the long run cost you a bit more....your tank paint....but you walk away with a little more savy...and then when you post on the forum you will be helping the next poor B...ard who stumbles a little.

Is this referring to the vaccum line on the inside of the fuel petcock?

The first time I reassembled everything I did forget the hose on the bottom of the tank, and I also had the gas cap removed when trying to start it. Now I can't seem to build up pressure. I am going to remove the tank again and make sure that little hose from the tank is in the fuel petcock hole. The weird thing is, everytime I undo the fuel line at the petcock, there is gas present. It just won't go to the carb. My dealership is booked up for 2 weeks, so I have time to work on it.....lol
