have a 04' custom Sporty 883 and live in the cold. Went to winterize the bike and now it won't start. Turns over but does not start. Was wondering if anyone has had this problem? Is the oil to thick and if so? Do I need to heat just the oil or whole bike to get it started to turn over and start?
yep, definetly have gas coming in. As for the spark that was the next try. But a friend had a Sporty that was cold blooded just like our vehicles here. If the oil or antifreeze on our personnel vehicles are not warmed up ie. plugging them in, then they won't start. Does the same sound as my personnel vehicle, keeps turning over but won't start. Fluids are just to thick.
Check for spark. I spent a few years in Minot ND, so I understand what you're saying. Is your bike cranking really slow, does it sound like the starter is laboring? Is your bike outside or in a garage? Have you pulled the dipstick to check the oil, is it frozen?
What I mean is, if your engine is turning over fine, it's not the oil causing it to not start.
Yep have the smell of gas after trying to start it. Turns over just fine not labored at all. Actually ran it down and drained the battery, had to recharge and still did the same. The bike sits in the garage non-heated, the oil is not frozen. At a loss, will check on it tomorrow, at the firehouse finishing out my shift tonight. Thanks for all the input folks.
I used ta put a 100 watt bulb under my Shovel and then cover it with a blanket,it helped alot with cold starts......just remeber to check and make sure nothing is going to melt, just make sure you get it under the motor too.....
Yup, I'm curious on the spark. Fuel and fire should be getting at least a sputter or two. What all did you do to winterize? Did you start it before you worked on it, or did the problem begin after you finished? Or did you have the problem before you even began? How long has it been since it ran? It shouldn't be too difficult to figure out.
