Default New XL883C back fire

Hey guys!

I am new to Harley's, I have just bought my first one yesterday. It's a little XL883C(L). A regular Custom with 883L Shocks and mid controls. My Dealership swapped out the shocks/controls so I could reach the pegs and ground (I'm a little short on one end). It was a great experience for me..

..On to my problem.. On the way home, riding in the 24 degree weather I noticed a lot of back firing going on. I know the bike is fuel injected but I didn't know if the back fire was due to initial timing or just because the bike is new.. You think maybe the computer will figure it out?
I am new to my bike having a PCM, I do a little bit of tuning on cars so I am somewhat familiar with how they operate. Is my bike the same? Is this a problem and should I take her back in??

Thank in advance..

Nate Hopkins

All bikes run lean from the factory and your popping is normal, especially in this cold weather. You can send your thanks to the EPA. No, there is nothing you can "adjust", but you can look into a Stage 1 download for your existing ECM, Xied's, or a programmable tuner module.

Alright I did some digging and found the most people seem to be happy with the "XIED" so it might be a good investment. To run a little more fuel can't be that bad.

What is the Stage 1 download you are talking about? Is that something I can do myself (probably not) ? Or maybe done at the dealership?

You said this was on the way home, after buying the bike. I'd ride it for a few hundred miles. Let it settle down a bit.

It is lean, as required by our Federal Govt. But it very well could get better.

New bike no mods should not be popping on the way home from the dealer, maybe water or bad fuel which is sloppy of the dealer.
Mine didnt start pooping till i fitted an aftermarket exhaust

It was popping, but it almost acted like it was loading up.. Anyway I ran her down to get some new gas in her (no telling how long the XL was sitting in the dealership.) So far it seems to have stopped, but I am running it to the dealership today to see about getting a new (lower) seat put on. I am having a hard time putting my kickstand down. I'll talk to them about it when I get there.

Thank you everyone for the info...
