Hi,
I'm a first time HD owner new owner of a 2006 Sporty 1200c. It has 140 miles on it. My questions is: When the engine reaches core temp. there is a loud knocking coming from the lower part of the front of the engine, when it is cooler it does not do this. I took it into the dealership, and the mechanic said it is normal for all Sportsters. Is this true? Any input would be greatly appreciated since I have no idea if they are telling me the truth or not.
I live in Tucson where it's HOT. Never heard loud knocking. Admittedly the evolution isn't as quiet as a twin cam but hot or cold, mine sounds the same all the time.
I have a 883 and it has top end lifter noise but the bottom end is as quite as can be.The dealer needs tp fix it for you.Get the bike hot and take it down to the dealer they need to hear the noise to tell you what it is.Then if it is abnormal they should fix it for free.Expect no less you are a customer and deserve to be treated as one.Complaining helps give it a shot.
Sportster engines are noisy because they're air-cooled and have a bunch of straight-cuts gears and a chain working in there, but my bike has never knocked. The only thing that I could think of that would cause normal knocking that would sound like it comes from the bottom would be a very loose primary chain that is hitting the primary cover inside. Otherwise, any knocking is NOT NORMAL. If it is the primary chain, then the dealership should adjust it for you.
Tell the "stealer" to fix it, or shove it. Did you pay cash, or finance it? Or, if the "stealer" says it's OK, then run the crap out of it, and when/if it lets loose, you can give it back to them in a basket, and tell em you found the problem for them. I'm so tired of hearing how most, not all, but most of these stealerships come on with the "oh they all do that" bull crap. Like I've said here before, and on other forums, Harley is gonna loose their asses, if they don't start taking better care of their customers. The sad part is that the quality and workmanship will probably got to hell, before they actually go bankrupt. Think, "Harley Davidson" MADE IN CHINA
So, then what about extreme temps for prolonged periods of time. When it's about 95 and I've been sitting in traffic for an hour, I'll hear a slight knocking as well. Anyone know?
