About a month ago I got a used sportster windshield off of ebay. It is not the quick release one but the one that leaves behind hardware when it is of the bike. I need to order the docking hardware for the shield. The question I have is. Will it be easy to install the hardware myself or should I have the dealer do it? I don't want to spend another $50 or so to have the dealer do something that would take 3 mins.
My last trip it was windy and it kicked my butt. Since the windshield is sitting in my living room I want to finally get off my duff and get on the bike.
Also if you have installed one any advice on what tools it will take will be helpful.
Some pictures of everything would help. Also if the windshield isn't tall enought you will get the wind right in your face and it will make things alot worse.
Pictures would be nice, also make and model of the windshield as well .. I put the Tinted Memphis Shades Slim on my 04 Sporty with 17" being the right height, top at eye level..(Pic) Have not found one yet would be happy with on the 01 but am looking .. The main thing is make sure get the right hardware and center the mounts properly and goes as smooth as glass usually in a half hour or less..

Do a search for motorcycle windshield installation. You might try a search for the specific windshield you bought. It should be pretty easy! I'm sure you can handle it. It will probably require hex head wrenches.
Thanks guys.. Very helpful.. I will try post pics of the shield when I get home tonight. It is good to know that isn't hard enough to have to pay the dealer for it.
As mentioned above, keep the docking points loose until it's all where you want it. Use blue Loc-tite or Permatex Threadlocker (medium strength) on the threads of the bolts holding the clamps to the forks. It's available at any auto parts store and will prevent the bolts from vibrating loose.
Some windshields come with three or four positions, foward and backwards. This will direct the air flow over your head. You might want to check this out also, to see where the wind will be hitting you or if it will be going over your head. I have a Memphis Shades windshield and it has some different settings. I'm not sure about the one that you have. I'm sure that some of these guys that know a lot more than me, can probably help with this.
Mine is not the quick detach either. The one thing I learned is to take your time. Don't know your experience level with tools, but it's just basic wrenching.
