Default Windshields

I've been contemplating putting a widnshield on my bike this fall when it gets cooler and my buddy is dying for one on his bike. Before I go and spend the cash on it, I am curious to know if any of you have have, or have had them in the past, felt much of a difference in terms of temperature variations int he winter, or a big reduction in wind all year round. Logic tells me that there is a difference, but I am 6'3" and am curious if the stock, standard height shields will have much of an impact. If you folks wouldn't mind sharing your experiences with me, I'd sure appreciate it.

I have the standard height, quick disconnect on my 1200 C. I'm 5'10 and it's a little taller than I would like but not bad enough to cause me to cut it down yet. I wouldn't ride without a windshield. My main concern is not necessarily the temperature but just the wind pressure and buffeting at highway speeds.

I jokingly call my bike a Road Prince as it's a small Road King.

I'm actually curious about something with windshields. I'm planning to get one since, as was mentioned, the wind can get vicious when you go above 55 or so and it seems like that would not be fun on a long trip. I wonder, however, what affect crosswinds or the wind to your back can have when riding with a windshield. I imagine your body blocks most of the wind that would hit the windshield, but what is it light if the wind gets caught up in the curve of the windshield? I imagine it would only be an issue at lower speeds or stops, but I am curious if anyone has ever had any problems with wind catching in the windshield.

This could be a silly question, but it's just something that has crossed my mind while thinking about this.

I have a quick release on my 04. I love it! I rode once with it off and anything above 50mph sucked! It is even harder to hear things going on around you. I would recommend it!!!

I ride three different H-Ds, all with windshields. I highly recommend their use for any highway/freeway riding. Side winds, tail winds, cross winds are no big problem. The stock H-D windshield is of slightly thinner stock than the Memphis Shade. I have two MS and 1 H-D. I find that a cross wind from the right front or the left front can set up a high frequency "drum" with the H-D windshield. They don't do that to the Memphis Shades.

Riding in really cold temps, the windshield really helps.............. Riding in really hot temps, the windshield really helps. Riding in normal temps, the windshield really helps cut down the fatigue factor. You pays yo' money and makes yo' choice! ......... BC

Some good info. I'm also thinking about a windshield, the wind and turbulance at 75 mph is brutal. I like the open fork just around town, but I'm also planning some fairly long distance trips. I'm thinking about the quick disconnect shield. I'd like some more good feedback here.

Yeah... and a top, a couple more wheels, some doors would be nice too...

I have to say though, the older I get the more I think about a windshield...

I've got the HD Quickconnect on mine. Never had a windshield on any of my other bikes, all metric by the way, but after putting this one on my 06, I only take it off to clean. I like the look of the bike better without it, but it makes for a much better ride at all speeds and conditions if you ask me, especially at fast highway speeds.

Ditto on what you said. I've found that it deflects enough wind that I don't need to wear my earplugs nearly as much as I did without the H-D Quick Detach windshield on.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have been thinking about the quick disconnect as well because I want the option to take it off when I choose to. I am curious about the one response that stated the shield helps in really hot temps. I would think that a shield would make it even hotter because the heat from the engine wouldn't dissipate as quickly.
