Default Tach question

I have a aftermarket tach install question. I want to install a Drag Specialties electronic 8000 RPM tach on my 2007 XL883 with the SE 1200 upgrade. I'm trying to find out if Sportster's have a single fire ignition or not. If not, wouldn't it just wire per the instructions with the correct wires for power spliced into a hot wire somewhere and the green wire to the coil? Do I need a "RPM sensor"? And if so why? I've installed these tachs on metrics before, but am new to Harley's. Probably dumb questions, but any info would be appreciated. Thx!

I installed the same tach on my nighster. I used a crane cam adapter I picked up from J&P. There are other brands also. I tried a Baron first but it didn't work. Either it didn't work with the tach or I got a bad one. When I called Baron tech support, they said the odds were I got a bad one and to send it back. I opted to use a different brand then. I get a little needle bounce when I'm accelerating but once I get up to speed the need settles in. I don't know if that is consistent with the tach or if my wiring needs improvement. Check out my profile for pics of my install.
