I have a 2002 sportster 883r. My speedometer and odometer are no longer working. When i turn the bike on the display lights up and shows the number of miles. but as I ride it will not add any miles. The speedometer needle just stays at 0. I did the diagnostic mode and the only one set was d02 - Speed sensor power output shorted high or open. Can anyone explain to meet what that means and what i should do next to fix it? Thanks
Does the Sportster have a speed sensor that runs to the transmission?
If it does and since the diagnostic mentions the speed sensor I'd try pulling it and cleaning it off (it's a magnet and collects metal shavings). If that doesn't work try replacing it, about $60.
My speed sensor went out on my 01 RK and I had similar symptoms. If your blinkers stop self cancelling that's another sign the sensor is bad.
After jumping my 2000 Sportster with a large automotive type charger my speedometer, odometer, and turn signal cancelation quit working. I checked the fuses, cleaned the sensor, checked the codes. All codes were clear except 02. I could clear this one by holding the reset in for a few seconds but it would come back on when the key was switched off and back on. With me being the cheap individual that I am my next step was to buy a used sensor off ebay. No workee. Next was a new sensor from the dealer. Still no workee. Still couldn't clear the code. Next I jacked up the rear so I could turn the wheel and try to detect sensor pulses. It was while I was fooling with this that I cleared the code with the engine running and the wheel turning in first gear. No immediate results but the next time I started the thing all was well in Harley world. I now have 2 good spare speedo sensors.
Hi I have a Sportster 883 , 2001, today all of a sudden speedometer stopped working, it shows the number of miles but it doesnt add anymore. Also, the blinkers stopped self cancelling . Ill try to clean the sensor..
