So I just bought a new Iron 883...never rode before and it's my first bike. I figured since I just paid off my truck, I needed another payment. Anyways, I don't know diddly about engines or how to fix motorcycles, but I wanted to try to do a couple of mods myself. I decided to try to install a pair of drag bars for my first mod. I took of the left side controls, and then took off the right side controls, but then I attempting to slide the throttle off with the bar still attached to the handlebar clamp. Yes...I know...stupid since I was also pulling on the throttle and electrical cabling without any slack. I finally realized that I needed to take off the top handlebar clamp so I would get enough slack from the cables to take off the throttle. I get the bar back on and everything seems to be fine...but then I realize the throttle is not snapping back as fast as it should and it totally seizes up when I have the bars turned completely right. I adjusted the throttle friction screw, but it still won't snap back the way it is supposed to. Also, the return cable housing (the cable in the front) seems to be loose and not tight. I'm sure I screwed it up somewhere, but I just hope it's nothing major. If anyone has any feedback (besides letting me know I'm a dumb###) I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm sure I'll have to take it back to the dealership...I just hope it's not going to cost me an arm and a leg...
Welcome from Vacaville. It's not uncommon to do a mod that needs a little tweaking or additional fitting to get right. Unfortunatley there is no way to know from here where the assembly is binding. I'd go back through the work you did step by step and check to see where it might be hanging up as you go. You'll get it.

I'm worried I tweaked the throttle cables so bad that I might have totally screwed up. Are the cables made sturdy enough to withstand a couple of tugs without it giving out? I don't want to have to go to the dealership if not needed...but I don't want to screw it up even more from what I already did to it...
Have you adjusted the idle cable (that's the one that is loose now)? Not sure if the drag bars would give you more slack since the original position of the throttle moved forward. If it's not twisted anywhere of if there isn't any added tension it should just be a quick adjsutment. My non-expert opinion is that it's not major. those cables are pretty tough. If you're not sure how to adjust the cables, buy a service manual. It will definitely come in handy if you continue to do mods and maintenance yourself. They run about 48 bucks at HD.
I would also check the tension on the throttle cable that is involved with the close throttle process. The spring that causes the throttle to snap back is on the carb, or in this cause I guess it's somewhere on the fuel injection. I doubt that the spring is messed up. Most likely a cable that needs to be tightened.
+1 on the above posts. After putting drag bars on, I needed to re-adjust the cables. The throttle wouldn't close all the way. A little adjusting and now it's fine.

I think you broke the motorcycle, just send it over to me with the title, and I'll get it out of your hair. Also I'm such a nice guy, I'll let you keep making the payments!
Thanks all for the feedback...appreciate it much. So I did back the throttle control off the bar about 2 cm and that helped a bunch. And I didn't know there were throttle adjustments under the rubber boot on the cables...like I said, I'm a total noob. But I adjusted the close throttle cable, and it seems to be working fine now. I'm stoked it didn't end up costing me $100 at the dealership...
to whom can help..
i inherited my baby brothers 2006 night train after he got killed in afghanistan five months ago. anyway not going into a long sob story but my son is taking a motorcycle class here at the local tech school. he put these custom grips on the bike and since then the throttle is really sticky, wont close and even at times stays wide open. what can i do to fix the problem, as im not the greatest mechanic. and the school no longer allows personal bikes in the school which i think is so stupid. anyone have any ideas as to what to id be very greatful.
