Default Help required...

Hello,

I've recently bought an 883R (2007). It has V & H straight shot slipons on it which sound very nice.

However, I have no idea whether or not the air filter has been upgraded, and I don't think the FI has been remapped.

I can't imagine a remap is necessary if it's got the standard intake, but if the air filter has been changed for a more free breathing version, should I be worried that the engine has not been remapped? What will happen if this is the case and I don't remap it? It seems to run well with no backfiring or stalling.

More importantly, how do I tell whether or not the air filter has been upgraded? I know when you do the 'stage 1' thing the back of the air intake sort of disappears (if you know what I mean) and it definitely hasn't had this done.

Any help much appreciated,

Sam (London, UK)

Hi Sam,

Another UK London rider here!

If your intake has been changed you won't have the snorkel thing on the air box. And most probably will have a Screamin Eagle logo on it too. If you have just the slip-ons you wont need to play with FI, but if the intake has been changed you MUST have the FI remapped!

With the slip-ons you'll get a nice sound but no extra HP, change the air filter and remap and you'll get some more oomph!
Try:

for a 3rd party fueler if you upgrade you air filter.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, I don't think the intake has been changed. It does have the snorkel thing on it and doesn't have a screamin eagle logo. However I thought maybe it has a K&N element or something?

You say I must change the FI; what happens if I don't?

If the element has been changed, I have no idea how long it's been run for without the FI being changed, or even whether or not the FI HAS been changed!

Thanks,

Sam

In other words, what damage will have been caused if the element has been changed but no new FI map?

To confirm you have the original filter remove the air filter cover, embossed on the filter should be the the part No, the original filter will be a number like HD-*****.

If you remove a plug to check the mixture the bit in the middle will be glazed white for weak mixture, tan or light grey for normal or black for rich mixture - but you must have ridden the bike and warmed it up before checking.

To pull a plug means pulling the spark plug(s). Check the plugs lets you know if you're running lean, optimum, or rich.
