Like everything else, it's one of those 'bike or rider' safety or protection issues.

Each person must evalute the pro's and con's and make a decision based upon their own level of comfort.

I'm comfortable riding with no windshield, no engine guard, and my riding gear consists of boots, jeans, sleeveless T-Shirt, glasses, and sometimes gloves and a vest or leather jacket (depending on weather conditions).

Others wear reinforced riding suits, full helmets, guards, windshields, etc...

There is no right answer, or wrong answer, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even if that opinion differs from our own.

I still use engine guards but mainly out of habit, every bike I have had has had them. Just like wearing a helmet, I wear one out of habit, thats all

I'm not too smart, or so the wife tells me, but where are you going to hang the highway pegs?

now thats a great question. Called the dealer and they said I can buy the kit for 179.99 and no guards are needed, or I can pay 479.0 and they will adjust and move all my pegs to the front, shiter, brake etc

i will say whatever just becuase being a noob doesnt mean you need it however if you put pegs on it that could help with comfort and you could put some lights on it to help with night riding. I thought about for those 2 reasons.

I'm not a rookie rider, but just bought my 1st HD, and it's a Sporty. Engine guards don't look great on them, better suited for a dresser. If you can't hold up a Sportster, you shouldn't be riding a bike.

Are you saying you're going to "hang it up" if you ever drop your bike?

You might not be a rookie but if I'm still around after you've been riding 60+ years, let me know how many mishaps you've had.

I'm a new rider and I added an engine guard to protect my bike. I don't care what anyone thinks.
Highway pegs can be mounted on it too.

You can dump your bike anywhere anytime, so why not have the peace of mind knowing that its there just in case?

get guards if you think you need them, if you decide later that you don't want it take it off. a little pricey just to do that with, but if it makes you more confident or comfortable on your bike do it.
