Default 883 to 1200 conversion?

Hi all. I'm looking to buy my first street bike and have really liked the Nightsters + Irons. I have a chance to pick up a used Iron for a pretty reasonable price locally (hardship situation). I was wondering how hard the 883 to 1200 conversions is and about how much it usually runs? I'm pretty sure I would get bored with the 883 pretty quick.
Thanks in advance

I looked at the same option, but (although i am yet to buy it) i have decided to go for a nightster.
The cost will be around $2000 give or take to do the conversion (from what i have heard, but i haven't actually ever done one so don't quote me on that).
Seems easier to just go straight for the 1200 and save the hassle of the conversion kit imo.
Buy a bike you'll grow into, not one you'll grow out of.

Coverting an 883 to a 1200 is no big deal. If you can get a good deal on the Iron I'd go for it. I picked up an Iron a couple weeks ago and decided to go with the 1250 from NRHS and it was under $700.00. It was the cams, the D&D Bobcat, the 3" air cleaner from NRHS,the head, throttle body and intake manifold work I'm going to have done by Baisley and the race tuner that is going to push up the cost. Luckily I'm going to do the work myself (other than the stuff done by Baisley) so I won't have to pay for labor.

Are the pistons in the $700 kit?

Depends on your mechanical ability and the tools in your tool box. I'm not bored with my 883 yet. It does good at hauling my fat **** around.

Cylinders, pistons, rings, pins, clips and gaskets.

That is for 2004 and up, and mine is a 99. But it got me started, so maybe I can find something somewhere. More time than money right now anyway.

Thanx, RD.

Hey RandyDowdy, I have a 1999 XL883 and I bought a 1250 kit from NRHS for it. No problem. Just call them up and tell them what you have and they can make some suggestions for you. Nice people. I changed from drag pipes to a 2 into 1 exhaust from RB Racing and the increase in horsepower was enough for me so that I haven't needed to put on the 1250 kit just yet. I am thining about geting the heads done next (about $500.00 for the pair) to pick up a few more horses when I can afford it. The best thing I did was to change out the stock XL883 27 Tooth Transmission drive Pulley and change it for a stock XL1200 29 Tooth Transmission drive Pulley. It was about $100.00 or so and now it is much better for highway riding and I get a little better gas mileage too! At around about 80 MPH or so the engine is doing around about 4,000 RPM or so and it LOVES IT at that speed. So do I! You could also change out the rear wheel drive Pulley but it is more expensive to buy the rear wheel drive Pulley than the Transmission drive Pulley. If you change either of the drive Pulleys the displayed speed on your speedometer will be off a little bit. It can be adjusted with a re-calibration unit to correct the difference in the actual speed to the displayed speed. Anyway, just another option to think about. Enjoy your bike and ride safe out there!
