I had a part time job in the shop of a Honda / Yamaha dealer two years ago. These crazy kids with their bullet bikes would have us remove their wheels to have them chromed or powder coated, so we had to remove the wheels and strip them down bare. All of those rotors were bolted to the wheels with torx head bolts which were Loctited. The area of the wheel that the bolt screwed into HAD to be heated to soften the Loctite...otherwise either the torx socket would break or the torx head would strip.

I don't think that would have happened if there had not been Loctite involved, but there was, and the heat was absolutely necessary.

Torx bolts look nice, but often the diameter of the torx socket is smaller than the diameter of the threaded portion of the bolt.

I have no issue with them. I do not remove 10 to 20 alternators per week. So I am not paying the money for Snap-On at this time. Also, I don't think I mentioned Craftsman one time. Here's a little secret for drilling out bolts. Use a drill bit with a left twist. Us a bit that is the same size as the shaft of the bolt and sometimes you get lucky and the bolt gets caught and comes right out.

I buy left twist bits one or two at a time as I need them and keep them seperate from my other tools so that if I lose them, it's my fault that I cannot remember where I hid them.

For torx or allen key bolts I have found the main thing is good tools - snap on or similar, expensive - yes but it can make the job much easier. (I don't drive a snap on van but the driver grins from ear to ear every time he sees me)

Default Torx

My 04 Softail has regular torx bolts and does not use torx plus wrenches. I think some times people get confused and do not realize that a screw in good shape and a new tool can be quite tight going into the torx head.. Its easy to wrongly use the next smaller wrench in a torx screw if you are not careful or do not have a complete set of tools.

A Torx variant, Torx Plus, introduced about 1990 when the original Torx patent was expiring, is designed to allow greater torque, and to minimize wear. Currently, Torx Plus heads and drivers are patented, slowing adoption in the marketplace, but are licensed to a number of tool manufacturers [1] including Camcar [2] and Facom [3]. The specifications for these licenses are held by Textron. Standard Torx drivers can be used to drive Torx Plus screws, but not to full torque because of the loose fit. Torx Plus drivers will not fit standard Torx screws. They are shortened to "Torx TS".

Help me out here please....
Is there ANY other advantage to using Torx (+) over Allen? Lets pretend I have a set of Snap On tools and always use the right size bits--why do HD use Torx and Allen? Why not stay with one system.

As far as austhetics, I think stainless Allens look just as good, if not better, than Torx.

I am itching to replace every Torx bolt on my bike for stainless Allens, but just wondering if there's a good reason not to. OR if Torx are so much better, why not eliminate all Allens and go 100% Torx?

Thanks!
