Default nightster front-end fix

with so many miles on it, my front end had gotten clangy. it would bottom out if you looked at it. something had to be done and it has to be done on the cheap.

i used cheap atf from napa. i used 13 ounces (wet internals), which is slightly more than necessary. so far the ride is pretty good and there is no bottoming out and no weeping from the seals.

i'll put a few hundred miles on next weekend and will report back. so far so good though

How many miles? Why use atf?Fork oil is not real expensive, and you can get it in at least 15 weight, which makes the stock forks much better than the 5 weight oil Harley puts in.Brett

forty-something-thousand. i used atf because its cheap like dirt and is similar to hydraulic fluid.

i used the heavy duty hd stuff and noticed no improvement in suspension response. i think thinner oil is better when valved properly. the next time i tear the forks down i'm having the damper tube holes braised and redrilled smaller.

Heck my 08 has 15,000 on it and I am less than an inch from bottoming out the forks by just sitting on the thing. I might have to give this a try.

IMHO one can safety add up to 1/2 ounce of fork oil into each tube.
You can use the OEM type fill of Type E (5 weight) OR Harley Heavy Duty (10 weight) AND Screaming Eagle is 15 wt (I gathered the weights from forums)
This extra oil will help with sag.
One may wish to start with a 1/4 ounce see how it "feels" and build up to the 1/2 ounce.
The suspension will also rebound faster with this mod.

I would not recommend more than 1/2 ounce because you may blow out a fork seal, but you could gamble. The real cure is Progressive fork springs.

The service manual offers all the filling capacity specs and how to measure the oil level.

well after a week of commuting, i'm not happy. theres no leaking and no more bottoming out. but the damping is just garbage. i love the speed of the lighter oil but the sponginess is annoying. i'm going to try a bit of spacer this weekend, and if that doesn't help, i'll pull the damping tubes out have the holes braised and redrilled.

i'm still working on refilling the rk shocks. i may be wasting my time though. more to come....
