Fuel shutoff position
I have a friend that just purchased a 1999 1200R and the Fuel Shutoff Valve has a chrome cover on it. She is not sure how to tell if the valve is ON, OFF or RES. A little help please?? Thanks

When the valve is turned off, it should be in the middle. To turn it on you need to turn it so the long part of the handle points down. That would be a counter clockwise turn if you were looking at the petcock. Reserve is the handle pointing up, or clockwise turn from off.

Yep, H-D made it unnecessarily hard to figure out with the arm pointing to the right position but covering up what it says underneath. It would be easier to have it point to the right selector position, like on an AR-15 with a pointer so people can see what it is pointing to.
