If your oil volume is half of a V6 and the number of engine parts making contaminates is approximately one third, perhaps you could actually EXTEND the number of miles before a change was necessary based on volume of oil contaminates?
My Thermal stability is wayy way worse. Air cooled remember.
Oil at 220,,,heads at 275, top of pipes at 500.
Oil Is working far harder at It's primary duty, heat transfer.
Relative volume and mass of engine In relation to cumbustion chamber size.
Sit at a light an temps start climbing.
My last oil change i went with Harley Syn3.
Simply for the reason that all the Auto Parts stores in town didn't have any 20w50 and getting AMSOIL was next to impossible because their crappy-*** website is USELESS for locating a local dealer... just gonna order a case online next oil change.
I have a guy that live around the corner from me who is an Amsoil dealer. I just ordered a case of 20w50 and two filters from him. This is the first change I have done on the bike so we will see how well this oil will be. Used 4 quarts total for primary and tranny.
Im new to owning a Harley, I have had air cooled boxers BMWs for the last 20 years and always ran Mobile1 in them, I never used the motorcycle specific oil as the trans was separate. Do I need to buy the overpriced Motorcycle V twin oil or can I go with good quality synthetic oil? Are there real reasons to run the v twin oil or just dealer manufactured fear. Thanks
I run T6 in every bike from $30K Ducatis and BMWs to my TTR 125E. I service 50+ bikes a year for others and use T6 in everything. Blackstone labs confirms this works well.
There are far better oils out there than Harley oil, Red Line, Lucas, Mobile 1, Kendall, just to name a few, Harley only promotes there own oil, as said early they are not oil specialist, They look to the almighty dollar to do there bidding. I ran they're oil and at 5000miles did my own oil change, they oil was fried, I now change my oil between 2500-3000 miles and I also run Aircraft oil, 25-60 during the summer to help keep the heat down. I have been running Harley since the early 80's, I've had Shovelheads, Flatheads, Sporsters, Evo's, Twincams and now running the M8 motor and I still run a Shovelhead I have had over 30 years.
