Default RE: Gas shutoff

I'am with you on this one, well on bikes that are no older than 25 years or so. Every modern bike i've been around have vacuum petcocks that can't flow any gas unless the motor is running. Put it this way i have'nt turned my gas off since the 70's Out of about 25 bikes none have leaked. You don't have a manual fuel shut off on your car do you? Well maybe if your driving a model -T. HD did make some bad vacuum petcocks a few years back, that's were some of the fear comes from.

I agree that with the vacuum petcocks it probably isn't all that important to shut it off, but I still like to shut mine off every time I shut the bike off. That way it becomes automatic to always turn it back on before starting the bike. If you do it every time, you will never get a block from the house and lean into a turn just as it sputters and dies. Another reason I do that is because I have a couple buddies that like to shut your gas off when they see your bike parked. They think it funny to have you hop on it and kill the engine shortly after pulling away. They can't catch me with that prank if I always turn it off myself.

With the vacuum petcock I haven't ever shut the fuel off. I used to with some older bikes I had, I stopped that when I was in the middle of BFE and reached down to turn the fuel valve on and snap. This was before cell phones, so I had to ride bitch on my buddies suzyucki 750 back in to town.
