If Santa is on the ball this year, I should be getting a 1200 Conversion kit and a set of V&H Straightshot slip-ons for my '04 883C.
My question is...with 1200 conversion and 883 gearing, is there a problem keeping the front end down or do I need to put my 'ol lady on the handlebars ?
I don't think you will need to worry about keeping the front end on the ground, but you will have fun with the additional power...
Not sure what all is included in the conversion kit, but besides the additional displacement the 04+ 1200's are also running different heads and internal components, which also accounts for the increased torque and horsepower.
As far as gear ratio's, here is the difference with stock gearing between the US 883 and US 1200 bikes. (This would be the final gear ratio in each gear).
If a 1200 conversion would make the Sporty pull the front wheel off the ground that easy... It sure would put an end to all the 'real' 1200 debates.
You'll be able to get it up if you know how to ride, but it's not going to pop up and surprise you...
( Get your mind out of the gutter, I didn't mean it like that. )
That said, if your ole' lady is on the back, it will come up much easier if you decide to punch it. So be careful as you get used to it... actually, be careful all the time.
i have an 883 with the 1200 conversion and V&H pipes. I met up with my friend yesterday for a ride. He has a 2005 883 sportster with screaming eagle 2's. We started up each bike side by side, i dont know if it was the conversion on mine or the pipes but man you could hear the difference, mine was loud/low rumblin/and just sounded like it had alot more power than his. We hit some straight a ways where we both gave it the gas. I passed him up fast, he couldnt even try to keep up with me. He said he had his throttle full open trying to catch me, i wasnt even trying. He then got on mine and i got on his, the difference of power was like night and day. He didnt want to get his back....this is the first harley ive had, i talked with a MC mechanic i know, he said the conversions have more power than the stock 1200's, i dont know if thats true or not....
Power, as in horsepower, no. Power off the line - yes the 883 will be a little quicker due to gearing. Depending on the year, a 1200 actually make a little more power due to better heads and/or cams, but still be a little slower to get going due to the taller gear.
