There are a new style of clips that are 2 piece design, and use a set screw to keep them in place and from falling off. They work great, I had to do the same thing, I was missing the front clip on my Nightster. The clips are $10 for the rear and $13 for the front. They're worth the small bit of coin they cost.
Well the problem is they should be recalled and be free to the owners of Sportsters. It is a factory defect.Since the 2004 model year. That means 7 years now covers have been falling off. They should also replace damaged battery covers free of charge as well. The cover should have been bolted on.Might have cost one dollar to do during production.By the way they must be making about $22.50 on a pair of new clips.
I had the same problem as you can see in the pic i used a cable tie/zip tie, there was already a slot in the cover it has never come off since, I carry a spare couple of tie's in my tool bag in case.....
This is exactly how I secured my battery cover as well, but with a black zip tie.
I had my 08 nighster do this like 10 times! I believe there was a TSB about this and harley came out with a newer style clip. I had mine replaced last year and has worked fine since!
I had to use a zip tie on my 05 Sporty but after I had the cover replaced. The first one fell off after hitting a large pothole then a couple of cars customized it by running over it.
This is a common problem - I too use a zip tie and carry a spare and a box cutter to get it off if needed on the road. I did`nt know HD had a replacement - will have to check it out but $13.00 - is a rip for a factory defect.
What is the matter with you guys??????
Zip ties for a fix?????
Can any of you come up with a permenant fix?
**** isn't suppose to fall off a Harley. That is why Japanese bikes took a foot hold in the USA. I'll find a real fix and post it next week.
