What is the matter with you guys??????
Zip ties for a fix?????
Can any of you come up with a permenant fix?
**** isn't suppose to fall off a Harley. That is why Japanese bikes took a foot hold in the USA. I'll find a real fix and post it next week.
If you own a late model Sportster you have zip ties all over the bike...you going to find a real fix for them as well?
Well the problem is they should be recalled and be free to the owners of Sportsters. It is a factory defect.Since the 2004 model year. That means 7 years now covers have been falling off. They should also replace damaged battery covers free of charge as well. The cover should have been bolted on.Might have cost one dollar to do during production.By the way they must be making about $22.50 on a pair of new clips.
Agreed!!!!! Normally I can feel it pop open and I just close it. Last riding season mine flew off completely and did not know it till my stop which was 30 mins later. Come to find out, my friend was riding behind me and he said he tried to catch it. Good thing he didnt cause he thought the cover was plastic.
Before it flew off I had "new" ones put on at the dealership which I thought they were gonna pay for since I had not owned the bike too long. Than they gave me a bill of $50. WAY TO ROB MY POCKET HARLEY!!!
Nice resurrection.
The cover already has a slot manufactured into it. I drilled an oval hole in the clip to pass a zip tie through. The end of the tie prevents the tie from falling out while you're riding. No need to loop the zip tie. I use the same zip tie again and again. These pics are of an '04 with the '04 factory clips. The clips have been slightly modified since '04.
If you do a search, there's a few threads about this with other methods.

Reason: nunya
I am in the camp on the no zip ties there.
Yes, there are plenty in the Sportster, but there are uses where they belong to, and uses where they feel kind of odd.
Especially if you do have a springer seat, where that area is wide open view.
Anyway, it seems that in 2012 model they are using a different battery side fastener, which I hope it will hold better than previous models.
Crappy pictures follow:
All the hope in the world means little if the cover does fall off...that little piece of plastic tie doesnt look that bad after all. The oil bag cover will never come off.
