So, what exactly is a '' poker run '' ?
Thinking about going on one for the local animal shelter, but have no idea what one is.
Thanks in advance.

It's a way to discover new riding routes, meet some people, talk about your bike and give some dough to charity. Often, the card stops specialize in adult beverages.
Most "Poker Runs" are mainly bar hopping rides. Yes, they are for charity mostly, which is a good thing. But I prefer to avoid these events. They stop at 4 bars usually, and many (not all, but many) folks will have 1 or 2 beers at each stop. I prefer to stay out of a pack of 100 bikes where 1/2 of them have had 4 or more beers.
But, I do attend some Poker Runs for specific charities, I just leave after the first stop to avoid riding with people who are drinking.
Poker Runs are popular with many people, but not with me. When I am in a large group of riders that I do not know, I am not comfortable when they are drinking.
Some Poker Runs go in smaller groups, rather than one large group. And those are probably a bit safer.
It's great that these runs are for some charity, and I applaud them for that. But I do not condone drinking and riding, and that is a big part of many Poker Runs.
But, one good thing was, most of the bars had a plentiful supply of non-alcholic drinks too. Still, many chose to drink beer.
So I would assume that 5 of a kind is a trump hand with all those decks floating around?
All the ones i have done dont allow you to pick a card you already have. Come to think of it you cant. You have to stamp your paper in the box for whichever card you pull, one stamp per box.
I did the one for our Humane Society a few weeks ago and loved it....147miles was what we put on all through the Black Hills....GREAT TIME!!!
Yep 5 of a kind is the overall winner....we had a lady get that hand.
I don't drink and ride but I still enjoy stopping and talking.
I don't ride with a big group, just a few of us ride that don't drink.
Overall....it was a GREAT time and a good cause....definately GO ON YOURS!

I seriously appreciate all responses, one of the reasons I come to this forum.
I'm going to roll it, should be fun.
Its too bad we all could'nt all get together for a ride !
Thanks again. If I get pics of the run, I'll post them.
