Default Dumb Question?

This 2007 Nightster is my first Harley.... All the bikes I have owned in the past had a tach. First question, does this bike have a rev limiter? Second...do you guys and gals shift by the sound of the motor or by a certain MPH?

Thanks!
Jim

If you go by what the owners manual says, you will lug the engine hard.
The only time I look at the speedo now is to downshift. A tach would be nice, but HD has to make money somehow ... add ons.
My problem is my quiet pipes. When I'm in a group I tend to forget what gear I'm in cause I can't hear the engine.

Default Rev limiter

Yes it has a rev limiter. Shift by sound but I had to have a tack. I shift around 2-2.5K I have the billot Harley mount up off the caps of the bars for my tack. Actuall use the tack for my speed also. Harleys tank mounted speed may be old school but it sucks for use.

General rule of thumb if you go by speed is:

1st > 2nd @ 15 mph
2nd > 3rd @ 25 mph
3rd > 4th @ 35 mph
4th > 5th @ 45 mph

Although, once you start riding you'll get the hang of it and can tell from the vibration and sound.

I usually don't like to shift to 5th until I'm above 50 mph.

F--k me! I guess I will be having my motor rebuilt at some point, I run that bitch to 70 in 4th when I am on it hard.

She seems to like it though, f---er runs hard for an 883. (2009 Iron,stage1, re-map)

Not really something I care to do but you're not even close to the rev limiter so I don't see it being a bad thing.

Coming off jap bikes I was at first concerned at the speed to shift ratio, and after checking "WITH THE DEALER" it was like.... oh!ok,I'll have to get used to it.
At first it was weird having to sit in 3rd and 4th in slower trafic but now i have got used to it.The speed pretty much dictates shift times ,but at the end of the day the nighster is only getting happy at over 80kmph/50 mph.H
