Default Forward control installation......

Can anyone tell me if it is absolutely necessary to remove the whole exhaust system in order to install forwards on an '09 Nightster? It looks to me like I should only have to remove the front muffler (if possible?)

Cool! Only the front slip on, or the whole pipe right to the block??

When I did my 98 1200 it had the sock exhaust so i had to take the whole thing off if you have an after market just the front. I would suggest doing the drivers side first (left or right I don't know) because of the one lower motor mount bracket. that was my 98.

I took the whole front off to do mine, the bolts for the front are blocked by the header.

I have aftermarket Rinehart crossbacks and was able to leave mine on. the only bitch was removing the torque screw for the rear brake. Maybe a non-issue with stocks. I just kept working the through the steps hoping i'd get away with it, and got lucky. My tools are pretty limited too.

I put my fwds on without removing the exhaust at all. It was the stock exhaust at the time.

I have the SE exhausts..which I had to remove the complete forward exhaust, some pointers ...I had obviouslly scaped the bottom of the pipes in a turn which damaged one of the mounting screws I had to remove the damn thing (THE BOLT)with an angle grinder. Also you'll notice the bolts on the header are loosish, this is how they are suppossed to be so when you put it back ...don't overtighten.H

All I did was loosen the front exhaust pipe. Stock with SE II slip-ons. You just need a little wiggle room, there's no need to take it completely off. To get the brake side mounted, just loosen enough to wiggle it up. You will need someone or something (like some sort of strap) to hold it out of your way while you mount the clevis and the brake rod. Just know that you might need to get a new gasket for the pipe where it sits on the cross-over tube. Once you move it, that little gasket will probably get damaged and cause an exhaust leak. It only costs a couple of bucks to replace, so I would reccomend doing it just to be safe once you move the pipe. Doesn't do much noticable damage but in the long run, your performance will suffer. Hope it helps.
