Question New Slip Ons Causing Popping

So I got Vance and Hines Straight Shot slip ons and they sound great, but since I got them installed I'm getting a lot of popping when I let off the throttle. The indy shop that installed them came highly reccomended and told me to bring it back if there were any issues which I am going to do but won't get the chance until next week. So my question in the mean time is: does the popping do any damage? is it a sign that something serious is wrong and by riding it with the popping am I risking doing serious damage? I did a search on this and found a lot of threads about it but they didn't answer those questions. I'm mechanically inclined enough to do routine maintenance but when it come to stuff like this I'm pretty clueless. Any help would be appreciated. Its a 2009 Sportster 1200C everything is stock except for the slip ons. Didn't do a remap because stay said it wasn't needed since I wasn't changing the a/c. It seems that it pops less when it gets warmed up. Thanks in advance.

poping when left off the throttle is not gonna hurt , now , if it was poping while getting on the throttle then thats a problem.

I have the same issue. Once its warmed up it goes away for the most part.
Happens less the more they get broken in.

That's really common, actually. It indicates that the mix is a little bit off at a certain point in the RPM range during decel. No big deal, and it doesn't hurt anything. Go listen closely to some highly-tuned race vehicles some time, they pretty much all do it.

It's the rich mixture when deccelerating caused by the ability for the exhaust gases to get sucked back into the pipe due to freer flowing exhaust. Nothing to worry about, if you want to cure it, I suggest having the motorcycle tuned so it will be leaner on deccel to help eliminate the popping sound. Good luck!

I have the same issue on the same scoot (2008) and it does the same thing - some posts here say a baffle will help and I`ll do that this winter - but no damage to your engine.

I have the straightshots slip-ons on my 09 883 and I have never had any popping on decel. You may want to have the shop check to make sure there are no exhaust leaks. When I installed mine, I replaced the crossover gaskets and used brand new torca clamps to hold the mufflers to the head pipes so that I would get a good seal. I hope you get your problem resolved. I love the sound of the straightshots!

It can also be caused by a lean mixture. I don't really understand that, but have been assured by several competent race tuners that it is the case. If yours is popping due to a lean condition, having it tuned leaner may not fix it. Either way, it is curable, but is not an issue as is (and I like the way it sounds, frankly).

Did they do any remaping? If not that should be done. If they did then you may have an exhaust leak....

I have an 08 Nightster and my Dad has a 98 Wide Glide. We also used to have a 73 sportster. All of them do it.
