Hi, I'm going to see a 2000 Sportster 1200 at the weekend (UK, Scotland), the frame's on an Irish registration (was originally an 883 I think) the seller has a 12 engine for it (if there are diffirent types sorry I dont know ie pan, shovel head ect). Its being sold as project though as thats been made clear in the ad, its mainly all there apart from a seat, clocks and maybe some other small bit n pieces.
For someone the know nothing about Harleys is it wise taking this on, thanks for any help/advice
I would think it depends on your mechanical ability, parts availability, and total cost to complete your project. Also makes for a clean canvas to make it the way you want it.
My knowledge on bikes isnt to bad, its just that'll have to be registered here (UK), I'll know more at the weekend, I thought I would have had more replies though unless its been asked a million times before
If you're asking about titling it then I think you'll be ok. It's a 2000 so the VIN is on the frame. Every time I've purchased an out of state bike I have to have the police do a VIN check on it and never have looked to see if the motor numbers match the frame.
If you're concerned, write down the motor numbers & frame numbers and take the to the police station to do a check to make sure neither part is stolen.
I honestly thought i'd have got more response than this, only 2 out 67......i guess not, i'll just need to remember to either search or google first instead. And here was me thinking Harley owners were a helpfull bunch, i guess i was wrong.
I am really not familiar with UK and Ireland Registration laws .. Also a little vague on description here .. Was it an 883 that has had the Big Bore done to it or a different 1200 engine from the original?? .. If a different engine steps will have to be taken about getting things matched up for a title I would assume ... If was just a BB done to the 883 then is the original engine and should be no worries..
Cupa t some days we are all out riding,,some times for days,,
I wish I could afford and find a project bike,,,Make shure ya don't pay too much and
buy It.
You may have to to engine work,,,so be It
Electrical work,,,You can Learn as you go
Like he said check with the Police,,
An If the bike moves your soul,,go for It

Ok..
Thats it though....I dont know anything about them and dont how much is to much. I'm trying to get a mate to come as he's built a few (not Harleys though) in his time, to shed some light on it.
As said above (like you say) I'll write the numbers and check them, and take it from there.
I guess there isnt that much to Sportsters though....just a simple raw bike....not like the R1's, Blade's ect I had
Remember, too, that many of us would rather not give an answer just to hear ourselves type, so if we don't have any helpful information (I didn't), we just don't answer. Doesn't mean we don't care, just that we couldn't help you with this particular problem.
