Default Difficult projects?

Hi All,

As usual, having just purchased a new 2011 Sportster 48 I now am in the process of really making it mine through customization. I would like to perform as as many of the mods as I can myself both for saving a few bucks as well as for the fun of it - but, I don't want to get in over my head and have to carry a bucket of parts to the local dealer for them to reassemble and repair. My two contemplated projects at present are: 1. installation of the spring solo seat and 2. removal of the peanut gas tank for shipping to a custom painter with reattachment on return.
I am seeking advice as to the difficulty of these projects. Can a "home wrench" with few tools successfully do these or should I pay up. Any experience? Thanks.

If you can change oil you can do these projects. Very easy. I do suggest to everyone that they ante up for service manual. Invaluable info in there.

Stone simple tasks, really. You can do these if you know which end of a screwdriver the vodka goes in.

I've heard that the HD service manual is available online for something like $29, but don't remember the IP for it.

So far I haven't been able to locate the Factory Manual for 2010 XL1200X or later.
My local HD Dealer feels it will take one hour of shop time at $89/hour to bolt the seat on so I plan on "feeling my way" through the job. Hopefully I can do it. I am unsure as yet as to the shop time to be quoted to remove and replace the tank.
Thanks for the help.

I had my gas tank replaced, meaning they took one off and put another on in an hour by my dealer. It was warrantied so I didn't have to pay, so I don't know exactly what the book labor time is. Meaning if they do it in an hour and the book says that it should take 2 hours, you still get charged 2 hours labor. Thats the incentive for getting jobs in and out as fast as possible.

The book is probably an hour, but I can do it in 1/2 that, and I'm no mechanic.

The removal of the tank is made so much easier with the quick release fuel line clip.Check what tools you need prior to starting, there must be 100's of diffrent sizes and shapes of nuts on a Harley and that takes time if you suddenlly need a wrench you don't have.good speed.H
