2005 1200 XLC Carb Woes, Erratic Idle
She started right up and ran fine, no surging idle. I let her run for a long while (I'm a little fuzzy from the fumes). As she warmed she seemed to lean out just fine as I pushed the choke in. I had to turn up the idle just a little after she was warm, but it feels like I'm tweaking instead of searching for a functional spot. She was smooth across the idle. And then she started getting really rich. Puffing black smoke. I took her for a short run (its 46 degrees) but she seems like her old potent self. So smooth, and still a screamer. I love this bike again.
When I got back to the shop, I pulled that vacuum line and there is fuel dripping from the petcock. I can't see this described in the manual. So stupid question, should there be any fuel at all, or absolutely none? And second stupid question, do I replace the fuel valve or is there a repair?
Once again, thank you!
Looks like your on the way to resolving the (compound) problems.
I don't think I would have found the leaking fuel valve on my own. After studying online, its a commonly understood problem. I guess I would have liked for the dealer to find it.
Two thoughts, I'm a better wrench for this experience, and I need to wrench not just for economy but out of necessity.
Thanks to all who contribute to this forum, especially you cHarley. I hope to have this bike in Daytona in March.
