I bought my girlfriend an 01' 883 Custom....and I ride it some....after riding my Deuce....this thing feels like a toy....my question is, will I see a significant change in performance just by going from 883 to 1200....or do I need to do cam, heads etc....the only mods it has now is SE pipes and jet kit in carb....thanks for any help
you will feel a difference but not alot. I suggest a good matched set of heads and pistons to go with that upgrade, as well as better cams and ignition. It will be like a whole different animal. When I did my'02, I went with Buell heads, jugs, and slugs. Also did a single fire ignition with n4 cams. Already had the intake and exhaust in place and she ran darn good, BIG difference over the way she was.
883 to 1200 kits,,,
45 hp to 65 ish
50ft Lbs tq to 70,,
Yeah I'd say thats a big diff,,
Your still gonna have the lower 883 gearing,,
A Box stock factory 1200 turns 3,500 rpms at 75 mph,,
the 883 tranny turns 4,200 at 75 mph,,
Factory 1200's are smoother at superslab speeds
converted 883 to 1200's got tons of yank around town XD
Even Rubber mounts get a little buzzy past 3,800 rpms.
I'd change final gear ratio on that conversion especially since ya got a hard mount engine.
The added Piston mass will slightly Increase vibrations.
A significant (1200cc) increase in displacement, will have a very significant increase in horse power. Locating some Buel or 1200Custom heads will help as well. Cams are not required but you will need torejet the carb.
Thanks guys....I already thought about the gearing...but I know more about the twin cams...than I do these sportster....why are the Buell heads better? how are they different from the ones that I have on the 883?
I know I sound like a broken record here when it comes to threads like this by my opinion is that simply increasing your displacement is a waste of time and money. If you're going to do it, do it right. Get some Thunderstorm of XB heads, a decent cam, and a decent ignition. I run Thunderstorm pistons and heads on my 1200 and couldn't be happier. Don't go with the factory pre-2004 1200 heads as they stink. Go with either the Thunderstorms or the stock XB heads that came 2004 on 1200s.
quite frankly, I would not do the upgrade until the lady has put quite a few miles on the bike and is very comfortable with the power of the bike as it will be significantly stronger after the upgrade especially if you leave the stock 883 primary gearing. give her some time to get comfortable with the bike as is first.
You DO have to re-jet the carb, but that's not a big deal.
And there is a significant difference. With the 1250 engine I have, running a 10.5:1 compression ratio, along with the 883 gearing it's a bit scary off the line. I can stand the bike up like it's a crotch rocket if I want.
