I wish the Harley marketing team would release some better pictures of the metal flake "spectrum" paint jobs for for Forty Eight. The only decent pic that I seem to find is the yellow. It would be nice to see the other examples like root beer etc. Oh well, maybe soon
I'm ordering a forty-eight with the blue spectrum paint.. basically crossing my fingers.. haha. Yeah I was pretty pissed when I found out they got rid of "purgatory". sad face
IMO if H-D really wanted to sell a reasonable number of Spectrum metalflake tanks, they would paint a batch of them in different colors and have them on display at the parts department. And give the buyer a reasonable trade-in credit for the new tank that is being replaced. What H-D is doing now is either an effort to ensure "exclusivity" or just dumb marketing.
H-D's procedure which requires you to send in your tank, or buy a new or perfect used tank and send it to the Color Shop for refinishing is what kept me from buying one. I was quoted a 13+ week turnaround time by two different dealers in my area. That would be well into the Spring riding season.
There is a new 48 on the showroom floor at the dealer I bought my bike from, with a 3.3 gallon Nightster size Big Bass Gold Spectrum tank installed. They want a $1200 upcharge for it! But they will kindly give the buyer the original tank so that he/she can sell it on ebay or a H-D Forum. No thanks.
Soooo.....my tank is at my favorite body shop getting redone in '05-06 Corvette Daytona Sunset Orange pearl for way, way less than what it would cost me to send it to the H-D Color Shop.

As a consumer, I think you're definitely more inclined to buy the tank if it's sitting there in front of your face. They are giving you too many chances to talk yourself out of it with the way it's being done at the moment. Furthermore, something like paint, I want to see before I buy. Either way, $1200 is a deal breaker.

I agree with this...When I first got my 48 I was dead set on the gold Spectum tank but ended up talking myself out of it. I actually dropped off my tank at the painter today.
