just started taking my bike apart to paint everything and get the top end rebuilt, anybody have any good advice on performance mods i can make.really doesnt seem to be much out there for the 79
Spanky, it all depends on what you want the bike for. The first thing you want to do is go through the tranny. Ironheads are notorious about pitching third gear through the case if you do a lot of hotrodding with it.
Not knowing what has been done to the bike already, and you are only going to do a top end, go back with a good carburator like a Super E and a good singlefire ignition. Both will smooth the bikes temperment out. If you go into the low end, go ahead and get the wheels balanced, and a set of S$S rods. KB or Weisco 10:1 pistons for the top end would be good, and having a COMPETENT mechanic/builder put it together would be better.
The 1979 Sporty was a transitional bike. The new frame was taken from the XLCR. The pipes from a 78 won't fit and from a '80 won't fit. Changing the rear sprocket cover to a 80 and lowering the rear master cylinder, you can run 80 and later pipes.
When you put the thing back together, make sure you go back with ALL of the upper motor mounts Many times I see the front 3 hole mount missing, the one that runs from the front head to the frame. Also the one that runs between the cylinders and attaches to the frame. If they are missing, replace them. Sportsters in stock form are shakers. Have fun buddy!
