Barry- I had the same hesitation- it's hard to take a saw to a bike with 50 miles on it. I will tell you, once I did it, I never looked back and I love it. Makes the bike unique and puts YOUR stamp on it. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Mreed- good luck with that streetbob. I'm gonna leave the wide glide fender on my fatty for now and revisit the idea of chopping it next fall.
I'm really leaning towards hacking my way through that fender, just had a few more questions for you guys, how did you go about reattaching the fender to the struts? just retap the fender? Also will I have to relocate the ecm, if so where did you find a nice place for it? Thanks again
Barry- I just drilled new mounting holes in the fender once I got it lined up where I liked it. The ECM is a none issue on our bikes. The Nighster's (at least the older ones) had a hole in the fender where the ECM was located and guys doing those chops had to relocate the ECM's but you won't have to worry about it. One tip for you and I'm not taking credit for this-- I give 100% credit to MREED on this one. I didn't cut my fender where I wanted it to stop--I cut a portion from the bottom (the part that is hidden). This way the original line of the fender isn't lost and you don't see any cosmetic damage from cutting. Just keep on trimming until you get how you want. Hope this made sense. Good luck.
choppin mine this winter.....MREED & JPL what length did you guys actually cut off on the fender struts? Guessin I can use the rear tail lights to mount the fender back up as well? Thanks guys.
JPL that made perfect sense, and ok thanks for informing on the ECM, so basically we just have solid fenders unlike MREED's who had the whole, and thanks again, when I build up the courage I'll be posting pictures probably wont be for a month or two, right before my riding season starts when I have the money to paint tins to go along with the chop.
Mreed- thats a good point. I just picked up a fatbob and put a wide glide rear fender on but now I'm thinking I want to do something similar with that bike. Any thoughts?
take alook at my album, cut the fender struts off my streetbob "phatbob" to fit a shorty fender.
Im going to mount it to the swing arm. Want to keep the shocks so need to fab some struts. Not sure if Im going to use flat or round stock. I also have some hexagon rod, but not sure what will happen to the shape when I bend it. Ill post more pics when complete.
