Decided to ride to work today. 42F this morning. Brisk breeze. I plan on riding in much colder weather this winter.
Things I noticed were that my bandana does NOT keep my face warm! My damn sunglasses fog until I get rollin about 35mph, and my leather palmed web backed gloves do NOTHING. My jacket (Leather) is great, and my legs were'nt cold at all. So I am off to find some great leather gloves and check out some goggles with seals. Got about 400miles to do on Sunday so I will get to test all the new stuff out. I would love to stay with my half-helmet but I may have to go full-face for the winter..
Any thoughts or ideas on keeping my face warmer with the half-helmet?
What's the coldest prolonged ride you have taken and how did you prepare? Equipment etc?
They (I can't tell you who off the top of my head), sell dickies that have sort of an extended turtleneck, that will come all the way up to your nose. I guess for the 1/2 helmet, it is that or a balaclava.
I will more than likely ride down into the upper 30s. I have a good pair of HD gloves, a leather jacket, and am planning on purchasing leather pants to wear over jeans. Along with the windshield and soft lowers, I am hoping that will be enough cold weather gear.
I've done 350 mile rides in the high 20's (last January). In the winter, I use a full-face helmet, belaclava, insulated leather gloves, long underwear, 13" boots, and my trusty FXRG jacket with liner over a sweater. It all keeps me comfy on winter rides.
You need a mask or a full face. The mask thing is made out of neoprene, I wear one when I go snowboarding. I have seen people on bikes with them on. I cant find it on the web becasue I cant remember the name of it. Check out your local shop, tey should know. But when it is that cold, I wear a full face.
My full face helmet fits very nice over a hooded sweatshirt with the hood up and I have insulated leather gloves, long underwear, then I put on a snowmobile jacket and winter boots. I've ridden in all kinds of weather, it get's really cold when it's snowing and your trying to do 40 mph for an hour ride to work in the morning. BBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! My wife thinks I'm nuts. I probibly am.
Up here in NH. My first bike/first season. I have been puttin stuff together that I find works. I have a gore-tex jacket that blocks all the wind/moisture. I have a full face helmet I wear but now have to get a "ninja mask" to keep my face and neck warmer. Gloves, well I have tried mitts, bad bad BAD idea. I do have a set of gore-tex gloves, kinda thick and feel awkward but they do keep my hands somewhat warm, although my finger-tips do get cold after a while. Pant's, heh, this morning it was cold enough that my dickies just didden't cut it and I was completely frozen from the waist down. Can't seem to find a decent pair of zip off leather or goretex pants/chaps.
My wife also think's im nuts, whats even worse, there are 3 other guys who ride where I work, they have had their bikes in storage for the past 3 months... Im gonna take it as long as I can stand it!
For some reason, I am striking out on posting the picture... goto jpcycles.com and type the word "mask" into the search. Or cut and paste the url above
