Default first time oil change

I am going to be changing oil for the first time on my nightster. Do these things run engine and tranny seperate? Also I'm thinking of using schaeffers supreme 9000 5w-50 as this is what I use in my dirt bike. Is this oil fine for these things.

Yes there is a seperate compartment for engine oil and primary. They use the same type of oil but the two compartments are seperate. Don't know about that type of oil. I use the Screamin' Chicken Syntehtic they sell at the dealer. 20w50.

I just changed my oil for the first time the other day and wasn't prepared for the amount of oil held in the filter, it make a mess. The next time I'm drilling a hole in the end and letting it out slowly then remove the filter. Cleaning up the oil underneath with the wiring and around the motor mount was messy. My 2 cents!

I won't get into an oil debate, but try something like this. A 2 liter soda bottle works, too.

M1 20W/50 synthetic m/c oil's on sale at Auto Zone ($2.00 off). Better choice than dirt bike oil...IMO.

With questions like these you need the HD service book
BEFORE you put the first wrench on yer sporty...
5w-50w will give you a very short engine life,,,

I tried Bel Ray sportster tranny Oil, It said, "Made for sportsters" right on the bottle.
Shifted like crap,,I took It right out.
I decided thru reading that gear Oil, even a fine product like M1 was fine for a sportster tranny,
Also read that GL-5 based gear as Is M1 Oil's was slightly corrosive to copper and certain Insulator materials,,
Certain sportsters were burning out something called a "Stator" all around
13-15,000 miles.
Through hours of research the apparent difference between those who
had a stator fail and those who did not was GL-5 based gear oil..

I had the bottle ,,,Mobil 1 75w-90w,,,I took It back,,got me some
Formula + from HD.

I don't expect anyone to believe me, hell I still can't believe it
But there are many times, Not every time, I shift Into 1st from neutral and also thru
the gears, even fast down shifts and hear nothing,,,,Absolutly nothing.
Deceleration down shifts with good engine speed/tranny speed matches even Into 1st Gear
Are almost always scary silent now to the point I want to recheck and see if I missed a gear,,
that has never happend.

Let me clarify this,,,, I Hear NO gear clunk or chirp or anything.
the Only sound I get IF I'm listening for it Is a click,,Like cocking a semi auto pistol with the hammer.

I keep my clutch adjustment spot on.
