Default Riser/Bar question

I just bought drag bars and 8.5" pull backs. The risers had to be ordered bc they didn't have chrome. My friend had the same year sportster and did the same set up except he used 9" risers. He said he didn't have to extend any of his cables bc with the lower drag bars it only ends up being an inch or two taller than it is now. He said he just rerouted his cables.

So is this actually feasible or will it be a wast of my time to even try
