MSF Class and overheating???
The clutch will get "Mushy",,the shifting will get crappy.
It's harder than you might think to really overheat the engine.
You didn't say the year,,,
EFI bikes have a "Parade Mode",,,I think It shuts down the back cylinder
and or makes the AFR go fat.
If I was In a class with 12 or more bikes and they had Us all stopped In a line.
Like If a rider drops a bike,,,or they are setting up the course, I'd shut It down.
But for only a few minutes of neutral,,,engine off would make It hotter,,stopping
the Oil flow ya know..
Go to the Course with good fresh sythetic Oil and relax.
Ever see Police Harleys In parades ???
they dont even run Oil coolers,,,never have probs,,,
This is the first I have heard of having to take the MSF every three years.
As far as the topic, I think it would be an issue. But then again I am not mechanic and have little experience with HD. There are loads of air cooled engines that run at idle speed for hours and are fine.

Didn't know it was DoD wide but with the Navy base I work on we have to take the basic riders safety course then the advanced course once every three years. Have another year and a half before I'm due but should be interesting doing it on my Dyna. It's slightly larger than the Rebel I did the basic riders course on...maybe I should take the Sportster.

No problems over heating. Shut the bikes off while they set up for each skill test and that was in August on a 90+ degree day.
