Went for ride first nice day of the year. Got home no taillights. Was also missing turn signal lens. I'm sure that has nothing to do with it. Where should I start looking to get my taillights working again.
Ok. You said no tail light. Does this include brake as well? If so,remove the bulb and check it. Then check for corrosion in the socket. If it looks good, turn your key to the on position and take a test light($8.00)clip to ground and touch the contact in the socket. If the test light does not light up, follow the wires to there respective connections and try to locate a point on those wires where you have power Now you've isolated the effected area. You could have rubbed the wires bare from the rear tire possibly hitting under the fender.
Thank you. Yes brake light too. All lights in the rear are totally out. My next question would be. In order to take off fender do I have to take off rear tire? The bolt behind the seat looks impossible to put back on without removing rear tire. How difficult is removing the rear wheel?. I am semi mechanically inclined. Have lots of tools anyway!!!!!!
You won't need to remove the fender. If you need to get above the rear tire, put it up on a lift (Strap it down), then remove one end of each shock and lower the swing arm to get your hand up there. First, I would remove the seat, and unplug the connector(s) that go to the rear lighting and check continuity through the wires from one onnector to the other one in the back. Since you lost all rear lighting, I am going to guess that you lost the ground somewhere along the way.
well. ill start by saying thank you. and also by letting you know how much of a tard i am!!!!!! it was just a broken taillight bulb the whole time!!!!! so by me always thinkin the worst and not checkin that first i went on craigslist to buy a bike jack. found one guy wanted $100. talked him down to $50. while i was there he told me his dad had passed and his dad had a harley thats how he ended up with the jack. he also had 2 boxes full off harley accessories. 2 saddlebags. teardrop taillights(that are identical to the ones on mine)(so i no longer needed to replace the lens i lost to boot) , sissy bar(that bolted right on to my sporty), taillight assembly to a fatboy, stack of harley wall hangings, helmet, brand new harley davidson bike cover(retail $189) chrome license plate holder, fatboy pegs, fatboy foot plates, chome chain guard, leather harley riding gloves. all new!!!!! and a bunch of odds and ends as well. just kiddin around i offered him $20 for both boxes. he said no. then he said how about $25. after i woke up after i fainted i gave him the $25. then i asked him if there was an autozone around to get the tester you told me to get. he walked over to his toolbox and handed me one and said merry xmas!!!!!!!!!!! again thanks for the removing the shock trick. really helped when putting on sissy bar and tightening my taillight. YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's why I was saying in my earlier post to check your bulb first off. It'll save you time and money by going to the cheapest and easiest thing first. atleast it wasn't something more expensive.
