If you have an 04 or newer the Dakota Digitals are plug and play. I have one on my 97 and it had to be wired manually. Still have the same functionality but took a little work to get there. Here's mine.
So the dakota digital for our bikes just plugs in with no splicing or rewiring. Interesting. May have to get one...

Where did you order from? I see that amazon has sellers that have them for $348. I know the picture shows the chrome bezel, but the part number is the black bezel (If it has -K it should be the black one, according to dakota digital's web site)
