Default Lowbrow Velocity Stack

http://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/index...._detail&p=1483

I was looking at this stack for my 02 883C. I'm a bit worried about what some people said about stacks letting dust in the engine. I wonder if I could stick a piece of UNI air filter foam in between two mesh screens to add protection.

Is it just a crazy idea?

Yeah you can do that I see guys put some round peices in all the time on their bobbers.

Here is another option a "Stack Booty"

Ive had a v-stack on my xl for a long time. I just have a mesh screen in the back. I don't have any problems with dust or debris

But I don't suppose you've put 30,000 miles on the motor and then pulled the heads off to check the condition of the cylinder walls, right?

With that stack from Lowbrow there is no float bowl vent filter at all. Not even a mesh screen.

You say that local shop(S) are telling you what you don't want to hear...do you trust them with anything else? Do you get any other maintenance or service at any of those shops? If they take the time to suggest something (that you ask about) and you end up doing the opposite, you probably won't get the best service. Just sayin.

There's a screen for the bell but not for float bowl vent. The bell doesn't even cover that hole. Unless they've added one. Might want to call them and ask.

Velocity stacks are for racing where the engine is going to be frequently rebuilt. If it has no filter at all, or just a mesh screen, your engine will, not might, and not someday, but will, suffer damage from the dust, dirt, bird poop, bug guts, and popsicle goo from little kids walking by. If it has a filter small enough to look good with the stack, you'll get longer engine life than no filter at all, but you're still screwing your cylinder walls, rings, etc. If it has a filter fine enough to properly filter the incoming air, it will have to be much larger than what will fit on the stack. This is from all that fancy stuff you should've learned in high school physics.

If any of you velocity stack aficionados (and the stacks do look cool, and if properly designed will increase air flow) doubt this I challenge you to get your oil analyzed by someone like Blackstone. I guarantee you'll make yourself sick when you see the results - way high iron, aluminum, and copper. You'll also see high silicon, evidence of the dirt you've sucked into your engine. And the nice people who do the analysis will tell you your air filtration is bad. If you tell them you don't run a filter, you'll be the butt of the jokes around the lab for the next couple weeks.

Except for a bike I knew I was going to rebuild, I wouldn't ever consider buying a used one that had been run with a stack, not even a filtered stack.
