Running velocity stacks on my race bikes, I know the damage that they cause when I tear the motors down twice a year. Hope you're smart enough not to learn the hard way.... Good luck to you.

If it has a filter small enough to look good with the stack, you'll get longer engine life than no filter at all, but you're still screwing
your cylinder walls, rings, etc. If it has a filter fine enough to properly filter the incoming air, it will have to be much larger than what will fit on the stack. This is from all that fancy stuff you should've learned in high school physics.

If any of you velocity stack aficionados (and the stacks do look cool, and if properly designed will increase air flow) doubt this I challenge you to get your oil analyzed by someone like Blackstone. I guarantee you'll make yourself sick when you see the results - way high iron, aluminum, and copper. You'll also see high silicon, evidence of the dirt you've sucked into your engine. And the nice people who do the analysis will tell you your air filtration is bad. If you tell them you don't run a filter, you'll be the butt of the jokes around the lab for the next couple weeks.

Except for a bike I knew I was going to rebuild, I wouldn't ever consider buying a used one that had been run with a stack, not even a filtered stack.
Thanks for the insight. To be honest I didn't know any of this. I saw the stack and thought it would look great and yes people also told me that they didn't have problems with theirs so I thought maybe it's not that bad :-)

Does somebody know of a good stack with a filter? I'm looking for something very short so that I have good leg clearance.

:-) Thanks man. I also found stacks with cotton filters from Wimmer Machine. Anyone know if they are worth anything?

It would sure beat having just a mesh screen. K&N filters are cotton...I'd ask if the filter element is washable or if they readily carry replacements just in case.

I'll ask, thanks for the tip!

I might just go with that...
