Question I need help!

New to forum and hopefully to H-D. I've been a sport bike rider all my life, current ride is '05 ZX10R, at age 50 I think it's time to slow things down a bit and enjoy the scenery. my prob. is I can't decide which bike would suite me best. Orig. I fell in love with the iron, but I really like the '11 1200 custom as well. Local stealership (Daytona H-D) Gave quotes of 11,000 OTD for Iron and 12,000 OTD for 1200C.( BUT the Iron with aftermarket pipes, intake, and re-map). I just don't know if i would be happy with the 883 motor vs 1200. Also how do these prices compare to other parts of the country, anyone bought an '11 custom, if so what did you pay OTD ? Also, what's with H-D dealership's charging dealer fee on USED bike's. Daytona H-D charges 589.00, I thought this only applied to new bike's. Sorry for the long post, hopefully I can make up my mind soon it's driving me crazy. Thanks in advance, JD

People will say one or the other, it's unavoidable bickering to get involved with all of that, but personally I'd go for the 1200. I guarantee within a year or two you'll be putting a 1200 kit on it anyways, lol. Coming from sportbikes to an 883 is like going from the speed of light to the speed of smell.

I second that especially since your already a street bike rider.
Definatly the 1200,,
As for price out the door,,
Yeah It's spring time and prices are up,,
It's also a buyers market,,used bikes all over so do some shopping.
A year old USED sportster should be at or below $9,000 no matter what model.
A two year old used bike,,below $8,000,,
All things being equal bikes priced like this should be showroom new condition..
Bolt On extra's do not increase cost much If any btw

Oh and a Bran spankin new bike,,,dealers are all close in price,,,remember this,
A new bike don't have that New Car smell and ya gotta break It In,,buy Like new used.
the thousands you save buy's lots of add on's....

IF you do buy from HD don't have add on's put on the bike then,,,do it later,,
a $499 add on that goes on at the sale,,well If you finance, that add on will cost you an extra
what,,,$400 In Intrest,,,,,,Use yer head

Dealer fees are totally negotiable, and should never be paid, especially on a used bike. That's simply additional profit, as the MSRP incorporates dealer fees in the first place. The dealer will have a bottom figure that they're willing to take, and it is up to you to find where that is. $13,000 seems a little high, so I would go to a couple of other dealers and get quotes. Coming off a liter bike, you'll be disappointed with the performance of even the 1200, so I wouldn't go with an 883 in your case. You'll love the feel of a Harley, though, so don't let slowness stop you. Be very careful when cornering, though, as you are losing about 1/3 of the lean angle you're used to. If you know how to hang off, though, you can still hustle through corners pretty well, you just have to start hanging off at a much lower speed, and expect to drag hard parts much sooner, too. If you ride somewhat sedately, though, these bikes are a ton of fun.

1200cc. If you buy new much smoother and more power after about 2500 miles. If you
buy new I suggest you make them throw in the 1000ml service. I paid 10700 otd in
Oct-09 for a 1200L in Phx AZ.

Depends on what type of riding you want to do..

Just around town, and are serious about slowing it down, an 883 with do you just fine. I have one as my second bike. (I spent a lot of years on sport and sport-touring bikes too)

If you plan on longer trips, but will do most your riding solo I suggest a Soft-tail Heritage Classic or a Road King..

If you plan on longer two up riding, I suggest minimum a Road King with a passenger back rest, better yet one of the Ultras.

If you really aren't planning on slowing down that much, look at the XR1200X. Not a sport bike but the best handling and fastest HD.. Sort of on par with the old school standard bikes.
