Question

I called Brighton HD and sure enough they can order a CEI stator. He quoted me $119.47 for HD, $90 for CEI and $65 for Drag Specialties. He did ask if I had a lot of accessories on the bike. The only electrical mod I made was the HD part that turns my rear signals to break lights. Now it has me wondering if this mod played a role in the stator going bad or just coincidence and is a typical problem on this bike.

+1 - The HD stators just plain suck, I'm on my 4th HD stator, and it's the last HD stator I'll buy.

Thumbs up

A big THANK YOU to all who chimed in on this thread and helped me along. It was indeed the stator. I replaced the original with one from Cycle Electronics and it appears to be doing its job. Voltage at the battery is a-ok. I'm back on the road!

For those doing this part replacement in the future, it took me and my father-in-law 5 hours. This was our first time ever replacing this part. Gotta take your time and it sure helped having the service manual.

I think I have a similar issue. I have around 12.7 V when I test the battery when I rev the engine (does not go up to 13 or 14V). How do I do the test to get the VAC output from the stator? There are 2 connectors that I can disconnect from the regulator. Is it possible to test the stator from those connectors? When I called the dealer with my scenario he seemed to think it was definitely my stator and not my regulator because of my 12.7V reading. Said it would be $600 to fix. Thanks in advance for any help!

I have a 2001 883 Sportster

Find the Wire that comes from the stator, it is one of the plugs you see at the regulator. My 2004 stator plug is the round one. Not sure if it is the same for your 2001.

No need to spend $600 to get it fixed either. If I am smart enough to change a stator, almost everyone is. Get a good (as in not HD brand) stator for about $100, primary cover gasket, some O rings, new primary oil. You are in about $150. Oh. and a manual if you don't already have one.
