Question Stator or Voltage Regulator?

Tried to go for a ride today and only made it about 12 miles out. The engine & battery lights came on, then off, then on, then off, then on, etc. Next thing I know I've lost my turn signals and shortly after that my speedo went to 0 and no tripometer readout. Very shortly after that the bike sputtered and quit. Ended up having it hauled home for troubleshooting.

Spent a good part of this afternoon searching the forums for helpful info which I did find and I want to make sure I'm replacing the correct part before I dig into this project.

Battery voltage tested a little low but I figured its normal for an original battery on a 2006 XL1200C. Probably time to buy a new one. Voltage went up when the bike was revved. Battery somewhat ok. Unplugged the stator from the voltage regulator and plugged in a multi-meter to the female end. My multi-meter seems to only measure AC in mV. Weird. Anyway, the guy watching the meter said it went up when I revved the motor, maybe to 100 mV. Does't look good at this point. He hooks up his multi-meter which does show AC in V. He said his went as high as 2V. Still not good. Looks like I have to replace the stator, correct? Searching the forums indicated there is no way to test the voltage regulator. So before I dig into this, does it sound like the stator to everyone?

The stator should put out 22 - 90 VAC, depending on the RPM. (22 VAC at a fast idle)
Sounds like you have a bad stator to me.

The regulator is easiest to check once the stator is working. It should convert the 22-90 VAC to an output of 13.5 - 14.8 VDC when connected to the battery.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is the 13.5 - 14.8 while the bike is running?

Yes. 13.5 VDC minimum at a fast idle.

Question

Ok. We were getting 12 - 12.5 VDC with the battery connected and the bike at a fast idle. Couldn't get anymore. So I'm still confused. Is the regulator at fault or the stator? One sure is easier to replace than the other.

If you only have 2 VAC output from the stator, it's bad, start there.

Will do. I'll post to this thread again after the stator replacement to give everyone an update.

I recommend against using an OEM replacement. A lot of people have had bad luck with them. Use Cycle Electric Inc

Pretty funny. I checked out the site you recommended then went to one of their posted dealers, Drag Specialties. From there I did a search to find a dealer and guess who came up? Brighton HD. Too funny. Wonder if they really carry Cycle Electronic Inc. parts.

After the problems the some people have had with OEM replacements I can see why. Also there are a lot of dealers who carry Drag Specialties parts so I can see it being listed.
