Default Gas Mileage During Break-in and Pipe Advice

So I just recently bought my new Iron 883 this May and have noticed I have not been getting good gas mileage. This is my first bike and have no idea what to expect during the break in period(I know..I am a noob). I have been averaging about 75 miles per tank of gas. I do not hot-rod the bike or rev the engine during stops which I know beats up your MPG pretty good. The bike currently has 335 miles on it. Is this normal gas mileage for the break in period or should I take it into the dealer to have it checked out?

Also, the bike still has the stock pipes on it (I know, I know get rid of them) and I am trying to figure out a good set to put on. I have heard that the Vance and Hines short shots are a good set and I would like to believe thats why everyone buys them. However, I would like to try to stray away from the crowd and get something different so my bike doesnt look like every other one. Any one have any suggestions?

yep it's pretty normal during the break-in period.
when you pass the 800 km (500 mile) mark,
magically the fuel efficiency goes up.
i've recorded all my fuel stops in detail. and will post it tomorrow when i get to work.
before 800 km's it was about 7-8 lt/100km's.
then it suddenly was about 4.5-5.5 lt / 100km's. (and most the time i give it the beans)

may seem strange, but the dealership told me to give it the beans after 800 km's.
and given the data; i suspect that there 'may' be a pieace code in the efi that changes some engine settings?? for engine protection.

here's the data.
%99 of the time stopped for fuel in a 2-5 km radius as soon as the light went on.
notice the dramatic decrease after 750 km's.

JJ, there is absolutely no reason get rid of your stock mufflers. I am about 50 miles from 15,000 on my 1200C and it still wears the stock mufflers. I know my bike is quiet but nothing ruins a ride faster than following someone who has V&H Short Shots. They have got to be the worst sounding exhaust on this planet.

Default stock pipes and mileage

well the PO ( previous owner ) drilled out the baffles on the stock pipes ... talk about loud ... wow ... and it was getting 43 MPG on the highway ...
I as did my neighbors we finally got tired of the loud pipes ... so got a stock set off here delivered like new for $65 ... 10 mins change over and what a diiference ... trust me even with the stock pipes everyone knows when I am leaving .. but I can at least live with them ... and last tank I got 51 mpg on the highway ... so a 2 for one improvement ... not as quiet as the BMW k 1800 GT I test road yesterday ... it sounded like a sewing machine in comparison ... but very tolerable ... and witht the stricter sound ordanince enforcement locally ... I am don't plan to get any $150 tickets that is for sure. Any way good luck just broke 3400 miles and enjoying it every day I drive

Sur, I've read on these pages that drilling out the stock mufflers causes them to whistle like a bird at idle, did yours do that? Thanks, Dave
