1999 1200 custom
I just put new dyna coil and ignition now my starter grinds and smoke out the carb .
tuned it up three times , still have problem. Dosn't do it all the time. a guy told me to get a "starter booster relay" what do you think?
If it only does this when restarting the motor when the motor is hot, like when you turn it off for a short time for a quick gas fill-up, this is pretty common on 1200s. The HD starters are marginal at best when it comes to handling the 1200s higher compression.
It will eventually strip the starter clutch gear and require replacement.
Yep, I replaced the whole starter at 25,000 miles after striping the 2nd starter clutch.
The best starter IMO, is an "All-*****" brand 1.4kw. It's been 50,000 miles since I installed the All-*****, and I've not have a hot start / kick-back issue since.
There not cheap, about $260.00 last time I looked, but when you look at the labor hours to pull and reinstall the starter several times, $260.00 becomes a lot cheaper.
