XL1200R PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT IDEAS
Current Enhancements
Air Inj kit
SE II slip on exhuast
I am looking for performance ideas to improve the base 1200 I have... Long term may be to rebuild the motor with performance parts any ideas ???
Screamin Eagle Ignition system, it goes right under your seat.
With the stock cams you aren't making any additional horsepower or torque above the 5,500 RPM range, and the current ignition is set up where the rev-limited doesn't start to kick in until right at 5,950 RPM (at least on my 2005 1200C).
Even with the higher lift/performance SE "E" cams I'm running the horsepower/torque curve starts to level out and fall beyond 6,000 RPM.
I don't see any point for installing a ignition that allows the engine to run in the 7,000 RPM range unless you have a very modified, race track type setup. From what I can see it's overkill on an engine that's not making any addition power above the 5,500 - 6,000 RPM range.
Guess the 'aftermarket' ignition might have a slightly more aggressive timing curve, but then you need to worry about the octane rating of the fuel you are running, etc....
I don't know, just my opinion...

I hear ,however I am not educated enough on the XL1200R. That it is already a slight performance increase over the standard 1200's again I hear it...I do not know better so I could stand a tad of eduction on the 1200R's stock setup...
Was thinking more on
1. Roller Rockers
2. Cam
3. Valve Springs etc.
I was hoping someone had exp. with making these 1200's more power and higher revs(as mentioned by OldFenderGuy mentioned without the abrupt loss of power (fuel cut off - value float) c. 6000 RPMs
Traditionally -- from a gearhead point of view -- suspension and engine upgrades should be done in tandem. There is no use in having all that horsepower if you can't plant it to the road properly.
Past that, I'd look at the NRHS website if you want to start thinking about making some serios power.
