I've had my 09 for 9 months, dealer has never touched it. But I have had the side covers off several times. Still have not lost one.
If you are looking for a project bike, I like the late 70s early 80s, the prices are going back up by those years.You can get a 92 1200 Sportster for about the same price as a 78 1000 Sportster. pretty much all the 1200s and 1000s from 78 to 92 are at that same $3000 to $3500 mark IF, in excellent shape.
But then I only paid $5000 for my 09 883 with less than 700 miles on it.
There are usually several 90's Sportsters on Craigs list in the $3000 range. I just bought a 1995 XLH883 at the Harley dealer for $3000 that's in great shape. It's my doner bike. I plan on making a bobber out of it.
